Tastin’ Chicago

Chicago is a food-lovers paradise. The city is filled with locally owned and operated restaurants, cafes and markets. Here are some of our choices for family-friendly fun food stops for kids!

Needin’ A Meal:

AUGUSTINO’S ROCK AND ROLL DELI
www.augustinos.com

LOCATIONS:
233 South Wacker Drive
Sears Tower
Chicago
312-258-1840

300 West North Avenue
West Chicago
630-293-8602

246 S. Schmale Road
Carol Stream
630-665-5585

One step inside Augustino’s Rock and Roll Deli and you become one of the family. This deli pays tribute to Chicago’s rich rock music history. The walls are lined with rock memorabilia from throughout the ages. In the Sears Tower location (where we visited) you will even find a large collection of lunch boxes from days gone by. As if the decor was not enough of a reason to visit, the food will stop you in your tracks. From the most tasty subs you will ever put in your mouth to the classic Chicago Hot dog, you won’t find a deli with better flavor in their super fresh meats. End your meal with an Italian ice and you won’t need to eat the rest of the day!
Prices are great! Sandwiches start around $5.50, pastas around $6.30. The sandwiches are huge and filled to the top with meats. Two adults could easily share one sandwich if you can agree on just one! The real deal is the kid’s menu. For $3.99 your kid gets a choice of entree, dessert and drink! There are three locations in the Chicago area…FIND ONE! You will not be disappointed!

WISHBONE
www.wishbonechicago.com

LOCATIONS:
1001 W. Washington Blvd.
Chicago
312-850-2663

3300 N. Lincoln Ave.
Chicago
773-549-2663

6611 W. Roosevelt Rd.
Berwyn
708-749-1295

For a totally different approach to dinner in the city visit Wishbone. Wishbone’s three location offer “Southern Reconstruction Cooking”. Simply put…southern comfort food. While not a “kids” restaurant, they do offer a kids menu patterned after the adult menu, just smaller portions. The food in this restaurant is made from scratch and you can tell it from the taste! Don’t miss the mac & cheese or the corn bread muffins. Prices for entrees start around $10 for adults but come with enough food to fill you up! Kids meals are about half of that but do not include sides or drinks. On Tuesday, Wishbone does offer a kid’s night with free kid’s meals. That is the night to go! Plan ahead with their website menus.

MINNIES
www.minnies.com/index.html

LOCATION:
1969 North Halsted
Chicago
312-943-9900

Minnies is a small diner-type restaurant in the Lincoln Park area. The concept of the meal is fun: Don’t commit to one sandwich, order two or three different “mini” sandwiches from the 25+ choices. The food is common in flavor and the prices are steep for meals ($7.50 for the kid’s meal). But the service is great and if you are looking for something unique, this is an option.

BARNELLI’S PASTA BOWL
www.portillos.com/barnellis

LOCATIONS:
100 W. Ontario
Chicago IL 60654
312-587-8930

Several other suburb locations – See website for details

Barnelli’s Pasta Bowl is a fun location to take the kids and really worth the mention. Decor is fantastic and the food is as well. Kids meals are $4.99 and come with bread and drink, but are very limited in choice. You might be better to get an adult meal and split it between two, or even three kids because they are HUGE. Adult pasta meals come with fresh baked bread. This is another restaurant where you want to step back and take it all in. So many choices can be overwhelming so take your time. Locations are all over the suburbs but the downtown location on W. Ontario is our favorite!

ED DEBEVICS
www.eddebevics.com

LOCATIONS:
Downtown Chicago
640 N. Wells St.
Chicago, Il 60620
(312)-664-1707

Lombard, IL
157(c) Yorktown Center
Lombard, IL 60148
(630) 495-1700

The world famous Ed Debevics is a long-time favorite of this traveling family. The 50′s diner style restaurant features over-the-top wait staff that are fun loving and playful with customers. The food is good, but the atmosphere is better. Grab a shake, sit back and take in all the funny signs on the walls. When you hear them start to yell, watch as the staff jumps on the counters and dances to classic hits like YMCA! Burger start around $9 so by the time you feed your family it can get a bit pricey, so be prepared. So much fun, good food and great photo opps!
